ChatGPT vs. Gemini: Which AI Assistant Is Better?
ChatGPT is the better AI assistant for most people: it has the stronger free tier, the top-ranked image models and a full coding agent. Gemini is the better buy if you live in Gmail, Google Docs and Android, or want AI video.
The better buy if you live in Gmail, Docs and Android
Google AI Pro bundles Gemini 4 Argon, which topped LMArena’s text leaderboard, plus Gemini in Gmail and Docs, video generation and 5 TB of storage for $19.99 a month.
The Research Score rates each product on its own merits. Our picks also weigh price and who the product is for, so a pick can rank above a higher-scoring product. How we score
ChatGPT and Gemini are the two most obvious AI assistants to try, and their main paid plans cost almost the same at the time of research: $20 a month for ChatGPT Plus and $19.99 for Google AI Pro. Both also have a cheaper tier and a free plan. The real differences are in what comes bundled and how each fits into the apps you already use.
Our short answer: ChatGPT is the better all-rounder. Its free tier offers unlimited everyday text chats, OpenAI’s image models top the public image leaderboard, and Codex gives you a coding agent on every plan. Gemini is the better buy for Google users: Google AI Pro bundles Google’s top-ranked model, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, auto browse in Chrome (in the US) and 5 TB of storage, and Google’s models lead the public video-generation leaderboard.
Below we compare the free tiers, paid plans, Google ecosystem features, image and video generation, limits and privacy, based on OpenAI’s and Google’s own pricing, help and privacy pages and on LMArena’s public rankings. We did not test either assistant hands-on.

Why you should trust us
We compared ChatGPT and Gemini using OpenAI’s and Google’s own pricing pages, help centers and privacy documentation, all checked on October 27, 2026 (see Sources). For quality, we relied on LMArena, a public leaderboard built from millions of blind, head-to-head votes, rather than our own impressions. We scored both assistants with our published Research Score. We did not run hands-on tests for this comparison, and we don’t describe any personal experience with either tool. For Claude in the mix, see our ChatGPT vs. Claude vs. Gemini comparison.
The short answer
Choose ChatGPT if you want the most capable free tier, the best still-image generation, a coding agent, or an assistant that works the same no matter which phone or email you use.
Choose Gemini if you use Gmail, Google Docs, Drive and Android every day, want AI video generation, or would pay for Google storage anyway. At $19.99 a month, AI Pro bundles a lot more than AI.
On a tight budget, Google AI Plus ($4.99 a month) is the cheapest paid step; ChatGPT Go ($8 a month) gets you more ChatGPT, possibly with ads.
How they compare, feature by feature
Google ecosystem. This is Gemini’s home advantage. Google’s plan page lists Gemini directly in Gmail and Vids on AI Plus, and in Gmail, Docs and Vids on AI Pro. Through Connected Apps, Gemini can summarize Gmail, create Google Calendar events and play music from YouTube Music or Spotify; on Android, it can also make calls and send messages, including through WhatsApp, according to Google. ChatGPT’s closest equivalent is its add-ins for Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets.
Browser. Google says Gemini in Chrome works on desktop and on iPhone and iPad, using your open tabs as context. Its auto browse feature, which completes tasks on websites, is limited to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US. OpenAI lists a built-in browser in ChatGPT on its plan comparison.
Model quality. Gemini 4 Argon (High) ranked first on LMArena’s overall text leaderboard at the time of research. OpenAI’s best entry, GPT-5.6 Sol, placed 21st. In web development, the order flips: OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra placed second on LMArena’s WebDev leaderboard, and no Google model made the top three.
Images. OpenAI’s image models held the top three spots on LMArena’s text-to-image leaderboard; Google’s Nano Banana 2.1 was fifth (preliminary). Both include image generation on their free tiers.
Video. Google’s plan page lists video generation from AI Plus up, and its Gemini Omni models led LMArena’s text-to-video leaderboard. OpenAI’s ChatGPT pricing page doesn’t list video generation. See our best AI video generator guide.
Coding. ChatGPT includes Codex on every plan (limited on Free). Google’s AI Pro includes higher limits for its Jules coding agent and entry-level limits in Antigravity. Our best AI coding assistant guide compares these tools.
Files and context. Gemini’s paid plans offer a 1-million-token context window (about 1,500 pages of text, per Google), with up to 10 files per prompt at up to 100 MB each (videos up to 2 GB). ChatGPT’s Instant model has 54,000 tokens on Plus and its reasoning models 256,000; documents can be up to 512 MB, with up to 80 uploads every three hours (three a day on Free).
Usage limits. ChatGPT Free offers unlimited everyday text chats. Google describes its tiers relative to Free: AI Plus gets twice Free’s limits, AI Pro four times, and AI Ultra up to 20 times AI Pro.
How we compared them
Quality: LMArena rankings for overall text, web development, images and video.
Ecosystem: integrations with email, documents, browsers and phones, from Google’s and OpenAI’s own pages.
Limits: context windows, file uploads and usage caps from official help pages.
Price: free tiers, budget tiers, the main paid plan and higher tiers, all at the time of research.
Privacy: training defaults, human review, retention and opt-outs, from each company’s privacy documentation.

C
ChatGPT
8.2/10
ChatGPT has the most capable free tier, the top-ranked image models and the Codex coding agent, with a plan for every budget from $8 to $500 a month.
ChatGPT is the better pick for most people because its free tier and its feature list are both broader. OpenAI’s help center says Free users get unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse safeguards, plus web search, file and image uploads, data analysis and image creation, each with its own limits. Gemini’s free tier, by comparison, runs on Google’s smaller Flash-Lite model, according to Google’s plan page.
Paying $20 a month for Plus adds advanced reasoning models, more complex and precise image creation, expanded deep research, projects and scheduled tasks, voice and video chats, and expanded Codex use. Codex on Plus runs on the web, in the CLI, in IDE extensions and on iOS, according to OpenAI. If Free isn’t enough but Plus feels like too much, OpenAI’s Codex pricing page lists ChatGPT Go at $8 a month, with more messages, uploads, images and voice than Free.
ChatGPT is also the stronger choice for still images. On LMArena’s text-to-image leaderboard, OpenAI’s image models held the first three places at the time of research (the top two marked as preliminary), while Google’s Nano Banana 2.1 placed fifth. Leaderboards rank the underlying models rather than the apps, but the gap is consistent. See our best AI image generator guide for more.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
ChatGPT doesn’t connect as deeply to Google’s apps as Gemini does. It offers add-ins for Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets, but Gemini works directly inside Gmail and Google Docs on paid plans. OpenAI’s pricing page also doesn’t list video generation for ChatGPT, while Google includes it from AI Plus up.
Privacy defaults need attention too: OpenAI says “Improve the model for everyone” is on by default for personal Free, Plus and Pro accounts. And on LMArena’s overall text leaderboard, OpenAI’s highest-ranked model placed 21st at the time of research, behind Gemini 4 Argon in first.
Who it’s for
People who want one AI for questions, writing, images, voice, research and coding, regardless of which email or phone they use.
Who should skip it
You live in Gmail and Google Docs, want AI video generation, or would pay for extra Google storage anyway.

G
Gemini
7.9/10
Google AI Pro bundles Gemini 4 Argon, which topped LMArena’s text leaderboard, plus Gemini in Gmail and Docs, video generation and 5 TB of storage for $19.99 a month.
If you already live in Google’s apps, Gemini is the better buy. Google AI Pro costs $19.99 a month in the US at the time of research, and according to Google’s plan page it includes access to Gemini 4 Argon, four times Free’s usage limits, a 1-million-token context window, Deep Research, video generation (including a limited trial of Veo 3.1 Lite), Gemini directly in Gmail, Docs and Vids, and 5 TB of cloud storage across Gmail, Drive and Photos. Google also lists YouTube Premium Lite and Google Home Premium (Standard) for AI Pro.
Google’s top model does well on independent rankings: Gemini 4 Argon (High) held first place on LMArena’s overall text leaderboard at the time of research, slightly ahead of Claude Opus 5.5, and far ahead of OpenAI’s best entry in 21st. For video, Google’s Gemini Omni models took the top two places on LMArena’s text-to-video leaderboard.
The cheaper Google AI Plus plan ($4.99 a month) adds the Flash model, twice Free’s usage, video generation, Gemini in Google apps, 200 Google Flow credits with access to Gemini Omni Flash, and 400 GB of storage. The free tier is also useful: Google lists image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live and 15 GB of storage at no cost.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
Privacy is the main trade-off. Google’s Gemini privacy hub says that when Keep Activity is on, Google uses your activity to improve its services, including training generative AI models, and that a subset of chats is reviewed by humans; reviewed chats are kept for up to three years. You can turn Keep Activity off, but Google’s Connected Apps help page says that most connected apps then stop working on the web and iOS, so you trade privacy for the Google integration that makes Gemini worth choosing.
The free tier’s Flash-Lite model isn’t the one that tops the rankings, and Google says free users get a smaller context window than the 1 million tokens on paid plans.
Who it’s for
People who use Gmail, Google Docs, Drive and an Android phone, and anyone who wants AI video generation or extra cloud storage in the same subscription.
Who should skip it
You're wary of human review of your chats, or you don't use Google's apps.
Pros
Gemini 4 Argon ranked first on LMArena's overall text leaderboard
AI Pro ($19.99/month) includes Gemini in Gmail and Docs and 5 TB of storage
Google's Gemini Omni models led LMArena's text-to-video leaderboard
Google AI Plus costs $4.99/month
Cons
Free tier uses the smaller Flash-Lite model
Some chats are read by human reviewers and kept up to three years when Keep Activity is on
Connected Apps on the web and iOS require Keep Activity to be on

AI Ultra: $99.99 or $199.99/month, from 20 TB storage
At the $20 level the price is a tie, so value depends on the extras. Google AI Pro includes 5 TB of cloud storage plus YouTube Premium Lite and Google Home Premium (Standard), according to Google’s plan page. If you’d pay for Google storage anyway, Gemini is the better value. ChatGPT Plus has no storage bundle, but it doesn’t show ads, and OpenAI says its Pro plans are billed monthly only.
Privacy compared
Both companies can use your consumer chats to train their models, and both let you turn that off, but the trade-offs differ:
ChatGPT: OpenAI says data sharing is on by default for personal Free, Plus and Pro accounts. Turn off “Improve the model for everyone” under Settings > Data controls, and new conversations won’t be used for training while staying in your history. Temporary chats aren’t used for training but may be kept for up to 30 days. Rating a response with a thumbs up or down can make that whole conversation eligible for training even after you opt out. Ads on Free and Go don’t share your chats with advertisers, OpenAI says.
Gemini: With Keep Activity on, Google uses your chats to improve its services, including training generative AI models, and a subset of chats is reviewed by humans and kept for up to three years. Activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default (you can pick 3 or 36 months, or no auto-delete). With Keep Activity off, chats are still kept for 72 hours, and temporary chats are never used for training. The catch: Google says that with Keep Activity off, Connected Apps such as Gmail aren’t available on the web or iOS.
If privacy is your top concern, ChatGPT’s opt-out costs you less functionality. With Gemini, you’ll need to decide whether its Google integrations are worth keeping activity on.
The bottom line
For most people, ChatGPT is the better AI assistant: it has the stronger free tier, the best-ranked image models, a coding agent on every plan, and a privacy opt-out that doesn’t switch off features. Choose Gemini if you live in Google’s apps. For $19.99 a month, AI Pro gets you the top-ranked model on LMArena’s text leaderboard, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, video generation and 5 TB of storage, which is hard to beat if you’d pay for that storage anyway.
Both have free tiers, so the easiest test is to use each for a week on your real tasks. For more context, see whether ChatGPT Plus is worth it or our guide to the best AI chatbot.
