ChatGPT vs. Perplexity: Which Is Better for Search and Research?
Perplexity is the better pick for search and research: every answer comes with numbered citations, and Pro lets you choose models from several AI companies. ChatGPT is the better all-rounder if you also write, code and make images.
The Research Score rates each product on its own merits. Our picks also weigh price and who the product is for, so a pick can rank above a higher-scoring product. How we score
ChatGPT and Perplexity can both search the web and answer with sources, so on the surface they overlap. Underneath, they’re built for different jobs. Perplexity is an answer engine: it searches first and shows numbered citations with every answer. ChatGPT is a general assistant that searches when it helps, and also writes, codes, talks and makes images.
Our short answer: if your main question is which is better for search and research, pick Perplexity. Its citations are the core of the product, Pro adds 10 times as many per answer, and you can switch between models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI and others. Pick ChatGPT if you want one subscription that does a bit of everything, including deep research, image generation and a coding agent.
Below we compare the free tiers, paid prices, citations, models, deep research, image generation and privacy, based on each company’s own pricing and help pages.

Why you should trust us
We read both companies’ pricing pages and help-center articles on plans, models, web search, deep research, image generation and data controls, all checked on October 27, 2026 (see Sources). We compared what each service says it offers rather than relying on marketing claims or third-party price lists, and we scored both with our published Research Score. We did not run hands-on tests for this comparison, and we don’t describe any personal experience with either service.
Who this is for
This comparison is for people deciding where to look things up with AI: students writing papers, professionals checking facts, and anyone tired of clicking through search results. If you mainly want an AI for writing or coding, see our ChatGPT vs. Claude vs. Gemini comparison instead.
The short answer
For search and research, Perplexity is better. Citations are the center of every Perplexity answer, its Pro Search reads dozens of sources, and Pro lets you switch between models from several AI companies. Its free plan includes mostly unlimited basic searches.
For everything else, ChatGPT is better. It searches the web with citations too, on every plan, but its real strength is breadth: deep research, image generation, voice, file analysis and the Codex coding agent in one app.
How they differ
Citations. Perplexity says each answer includes numbered citations linking to the original sources, and Pro offers 10 times as many per answer. ChatGPT’s help center says responses that use web search “may include citations,” and that ChatGPT searches automatically when a question benefits from current information.
Search depth. Perplexity’s Pro Search draws on dozens of sources, compared with roughly one or two for its standard search, according to its help center. Free users get three Pro Searches a day.
Models. ChatGPT runs OpenAI’s own models. Perplexity Pro includes seven models from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Moonshot AI, Z.ai, xAI and NVIDIA, with four more (including GPT-6 Astra and Claude Opus 5.5) reserved for Max.
Deep research. Both have it. Perplexity’s Research mode is limited on Free and extended on Pro, and usually finishes in under three minutes. OpenAI’s pricing page lists deep research as limited on Free, expanded on Plus and at its maximum on Pro.
Image generation. ChatGPT is stronger here: OpenAI lists more complex and precise image generation on Plus and unlimited, faster image creation on Pro. Perplexity offers limited image generation on Free and Pro, using models such as GPT Image 1, Nano Banana and Seedream 4.5, for non-commercial use on individual plans.
Which to use for common tasks
Fact-checking a claim or finding a source: Perplexity. Citations come with every answer, and Pro adds more of them.
A research report with sources: Either. Perplexity’s Research mode exports to PDF or a document; ChatGPT’s deep research is included on every plan, with more on Plus.
Comparing how different AI models answer: Perplexity Pro, which lets you switch between models from several companies.
Turning research into a draft, slides or code: ChatGPT, which adds projects, file analysis, image generation and Codex.
Quick everyday questions: Either free plan. ChatGPT offers unlimited everyday text chats; Perplexity offers mostly unlimited basic searches.

P
Perplexity
7.8/10
An answer engine that cites its sources in every reply, with model choice and extended Research on Pro.
Perplexity’s help center says it searches the web in real time and that each answer includes numbered citations linking to the original sources, so you can verify the information. Pro Search goes further: Perplexity says it draws on dozens of sources instead of roughly one or two, lets you choose among advanced models and includes a code interpreter. Research mode runs many searches and writes a report, usually in under three minutes, which you can export to PDF or a document.
Model choice is what ChatGPT can’t match. Perplexity’s list for Pro and Max subscribers, dated October 17, 2026, includes GPT-6.1 Sol (OpenAI), Gemini 3.8 Flash (Google), Claude Sonnet 5.5 (Anthropic), Kimi K3, GLM 5.3, Grok 4.7 (xAI) and Nemotron 3.5 Super VL (NVIDIA). Flaws but not dealbreakers
Perplexity is narrower than ChatGPT. Image generation on Pro is a limited number of high-quality images plus medium-quality ones, and images from individual plans are for personal, non-commercial use only. Its most powerful models, including GPT-6 Astra, Gemini 4 Argon, Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Fable 5.1, require Max.
Its agent, Perplexity Computer, runs on credits, and Pro includes no monthly credits beyond a one-time bonus, according to the help center.

ChatGPT
8.0/10
A general assistant with web search and citations on every plan, plus deep research, image generation, voice and the Codex coding agent.
OpenAI’s help center says web search is available on every ChatGPT plan and for people who aren’t signed in. Responses that use web search may include citations; you can open each source or view them all under Sources. OpenAI itself warns that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect, and recommends opening the cited source when accuracy matters.
Where ChatGPT pulls ahead is breadth. OpenAI’s pricing page lists deep research on every plan (limited on Free, expanded on Plus, maximum on Pro), more complex and precise image generation on Plus, voice, file analysis, projects, scheduled tasks and Codex. Plus costs $20 a month, billed monthly, according to OpenAI’s help center. See our full ChatGPT Plus review.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
You only get OpenAI’s models, and OpenAI says Plus may include usage limits such as message caps during high demand. There’s no annual billing for Plus.
On personal plans, OpenAI uses your conversations for training by default unless you turn off “Improve the model for everyone.” OpenAI also says ads may appear in the free tier in certain countries.

Privacy compared
Both services use your data for training by default on personal plans, and both let you opt out.
ChatGPT. OpenAI says data sharing is enabled by default on Free, Plus and Pro. Turn off “Improve the model for everyone” under Settings > Data controls, and new conversations won’t be used to train its models. Temporary chats aren’t used for training and may be kept for up to 30 days for safety. If you give a thumbs up or down, OpenAI says the whole conversation may be used for training, even after you opt out. When ChatGPT uses outside search providers, it sends rewritten queries and general location, but not your IP address or account information.
Perplexity. Perplexity’s Pro page says search queries can be used to improve its AI by default; turn off the AI Data Usage toggle in Settings to stop it. It says it doesn’t sell personal information, keeps it as long as your account is active, and removes it within 30 days if you delete your account. Enterprise and API customers get zero data retention.
For business use, OpenAI says it doesn’t train on Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace content by default, and Perplexity’s Enterprise Pro includes a no-training data policy.
The bottom line
If you use AI mainly to look things up and want to check where answers come from, choose Perplexity: citations come with every answer, its free plan is generous for search, and Pro adds model choice and extended Research for $17 a month billed annually. If you want one assistant that also writes, codes, talks and makes images, choose ChatGPT. Many people will be fine with both free plans; pay for the one that matches what you do most.
